Cuba’s Communist leadership has publicly confirmed that Raúl Guillermo RodrÃguez Castro, grandson of former President Raúl Castro, has been authorized by the country’s highest authorities to play a leading role in negotiations with the United States.
The announcement follows widespread attention surrounding RodrÃguez Castro’s recent remarks expressing his willingness to engage in direct talks with the U.S., including President Donald Trump if given the opportunity. Although he does not hold a formal government office, Cuban officials described him as a trusted representative acting with the full confidence of both Raúl Castro and President Miguel DÃaz-Canel.

Questions had emerged over whether RodrÃguez Castro’s comments reflected divisions within Cuba’s leadership. However, Prime Minister Manuel Marrero dismissed those claims, insisting that all diplomatic efforts are coordinated at the highest levels of government and that the negotiating team operates under an official mandate.
RodrÃguez Castro has suggested that Havana is prepared to pursue dialogue aimed at easing decades of strained relations with Washington. He also indicated that Cuba could consider releasing individuals regarded as political prisoners if negotiations advance under mutually acceptable conditions.
The renewed focus on diplomacy comes at a particularly tense moment in U.S.-Cuba relations, marked by economic sanctions, political disputes and ongoing pressure over Cuba’s internal reforms. While no major breakthrough has been announced, Havana’s public endorsement of RodrÃguez Castro signals that the government is seeking to keep diplomatic channels open despite persistent disagreements between the two countries.
