Fathers are essential to keeping families strong, stable, and hopeful. They are central to the development of children, to the protection of family life, and to the advancement of community. On Father’s Day, we pause to recognize, salute, and give thanks for fathers and father-like figures whose presence, sacrifice, guidance, and love continue to shape our families and our future.
In the Black community, the long-standing narrative of the absent father is not only unfair, but essentially untrue. Yes, Black men and Black fathers have too often faced challenges imposed by systems that have deliberately weakened family structures and, in too many instances, removed fathers from their homes and communities. Mass incarceration, economic discrimination, racial profiling, unemployment, and unequal treatment have all taken a heavy toll. Yet despite these systemic pressures, Black fathers have continued to play a significant role in raising their children and sustaining their families.

Study after study has shown that Black fathers are deeply engaged in family life. They provide economic support, emotional strength, discipline, guidance, and love. They help shape identity, build confidence, and prepare children for the challenges of the world. Far from the myth of absenteeism, Black fathers are often highly involved across the critical areas of family development. Their contributions extend beyond the home into the wider community, where they serve as coaches, mentors, advocates, organizers, and leaders.
Caribbean immigrant fathers have also played a powerful and distinctive role. They have often had to balance the cultural traditions of their home countries with the realities of immigration, assimilation, and survival in a new society. Many Caribbean fathers have carried the responsibility of providing for families both here and abroad, sustaining transnational households while building new lives in America.
In the Caribbean tradition, fatherhood has often included discipline, hard work, sacrifice, and a strong sense of duty. At times, this may have taken on a stern or authoritarian style of parenting, but at its core has been the desire to protect the family, strengthen the family, and ensure that children succeed in an environment that can often be difficult and unforgiving. Caribbean American fathers have helped guide their families through the challenges of assimilation, racism, economic hardship, and cultural adjustment, while maintaining a sense of heritage, dignity, and pride.
For more than 40 years, Carib News has continued to celebrate fathers and their critical role in the family and community. We have made it part of our mission to challenge negative stereotypes and to lift up examples of responsible, loving, hardworking, and committed fathers. This effort to recognize fathers and their contribution to community development has been central to our work and to our understanding of what strengthens our people.
Indeed, Carib News was honored during the Obama presidency through its fatherhood and brotherhood initiatives for helping to bring awareness to the role of fathers in our community and for recognizing and saluting them. That recognition affirmed what we have long believed: that fathers are vital to the health, progress, and stability of our families and communities.
To celebrate fathers is not merely to offer words of praise on one day of the year. It is to inspire continued commitment. It is to show young men the dignity and responsibility of fatherhood. It is to remind our communities that when fathers are engaged in the development of their families, the entire community is strengthened. Children benefit. Families benefit. Neighborhoods benefit. The future benefits.
For us, this is a special mission. As we look toward community development, community engagement, and community advancement, fathers must be recognized and their roles must be celebrated. We must reject the general narrative and damaging myth of the absent father. We must instead tell the fuller and truer story of fathers who are present, fathers who sacrifice, fathers who guide, fathers who protect, fathers who love, and fathers who continue to build.
On this Father’s Day, let us give thanks for fathers. Let us work with them, support them, encourage them, and appreciate them. Let us also recognize father-like figures — grandfathers, uncles, brothers, mentors, coaches, pastors, teachers, and community leaders — who step forward to provide care, guidance, and example.
