A significant number of historians believe that Trinidad and Tobago’s “Carnival,” which began in the late 18th century, was the world’s first. The French plantation owners’ pre-Lenten festivities and masquerades served as the impetus for several innovative and culturally significant rituals of defiance that the enslaved masses, who had previously been forbidden from participating in their masters’ festivities, created and institutionalized, according to Nationalgeographic.com.
Enslaved individuals transformed the clothing of their oppressors into costumes for satirical portrayals of the lavish events they were barred from attending. Additionally, the use of coded language and drum rhythms played a pivotal role in the evolution of calypso music and its subgenres, such as Soca, chutney, Extempo, and Trinibad, which remain widely celebrated today.

Trinidad’s Carnival has long been referred to as “the Greatest Show on Earth,” a designation that should not be taken lightly. He noted, “The heart of any Carnival lies in its mas bands, which bring color, music and storytelling to life. Historically rooted in African traditions, these bands play a crucial role in driving tourism and local economic growth.”
Funding and recognition issues have plagued the Calabar Carnival despite its enormous cultural and economic significance. The absence of enough funding for the event’s growth has drawn criticism from many in the carnival community.
Lopez concurs, stating, “Carnivals around the world thrive when they receive the right level of support and funding. The Calabar Carnival should be seen not just as a festival, but as an economic engine capable of creating jobs, promoting local businesses, and positioning Nigeria as a global cultural hub.”
In his talk, Lopez outlined several important areas that require improvement, such as: Community Engagement—to enhance the festival’s contribution to social cohesion and cultural identity; Educational Development—to raise awareness of Carnival Arts in schools, with a focus on African, Latin American, and Caribbean customs; and Economic Growth—to cultivate and create new financial models to boost income streams and guarantee long-term viability.
The Calabar Carnival is ready for a new chapter of success with a well-defined expansion plan. The DGL Carnival Consultancy Agency reaffirmed its dedication to spearheading this change under David Lopez’s direction.
