The Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn has announced this week that it would receive money totaling roughly $535,000 for its Center for Law and Social Justice.
New York Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke successfully obtained the $534,981 grant for the community-based legal group. The money was allocated to various institutions throughout Brooklyn as part of an appropriations package that the House of Representatives had approved.

The cash will be used by CLSJ to begin its brand-new Esmeralda Simmons Pre-Law Program.
The pre-law program’s goal, according to the center, is to give legal services as well as mentor and advise Brooklyn College students who desire to pursue a career in law.
With the help of juniors enrolled at Medgar Evers College, the CLSJ pre-law program will achieve this. The course will instruct students on a variety of topics pertaining to the practice of law over the course of a year. Along with preparing students for law school, it will also provide a wealth of instruction and practical experience.
According to CLSJ, program participants will have the opportunity to take part in workshops, conferences, different speaker series, and other events to get valuable academic experience connected to law.
According to Lurie, “CLSJ is honored to receive this incredible award for the Esmeralda Simmons Pre-Law Program,” Executive Director of the Center for Law and Social Justice at Medgar Evers College is Daniel Favors, Esq.
“It allows us to pay tribute to the legacy of our pioneering founding director and civil rights attorney Esmeralda Simmons by nurturing our community’s next generation of legal scholars and advocates. This program will set the gold standard for preparing students from our communities for the rigors of law school and the legal profession while employing a racial justice legal framework so that they can work to advance equity and justice in New York and our nation.”
