Thousands of Jamaicans and supporters of Jamaican culture filled the streets of Brooklyn for the inaugural Jamaica Rising Day Parade, marking the city’s first parade dedicated exclusively to celebrating Jamaica’s Independence, heritage and cultural contributions. Organizers say the historic event is intended to become an annual tradition honoring the Jamaican diaspora in New York.
Held on August 8, the parade began at Church Avenue and Ocean Avenue in Flatbush before traveling north along Ocean Avenue to Lincoln Road near Empire Boulevard. The celebration drew elected officials, community leaders, cultural organizations, entertainers and thousands of spectators waving the black, green and gold Jamaican flag.

Organized under the theme “One People. One Culture. One Jamaica,” the Jamaica Rising Day Parade was created to celebrate Jamaica’s Independence while highlighting the achievements and contributions of Jamaicans and Jamaican Americans in the United States. Organizers also hope the event will promote cultural preservation, community empowerment and economic development within the diaspora.
The festivities began with a VIP breakfast before the parade, followed by live music, cultural performances and appearances by several public officials. New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams joined the celebration, describing the inaugural event as a proud moment for Brooklyn’s Jamaican community and praising the visible display of Jamaican culture throughout the borough.
Entertainment featured reggae and dancehall performances, including music by DJ Danglez of Federation Sound, while vendors showcased authentic Jamaican cuisine, arts and crafts, and cultural exhibits. Organizers said the event was designed to reflect the vibrancy and diversity of Jamaica’s cultural heritage.
The parade was spearheaded by Dr. Bill Tinglin and Dr. Lawman Lynch, who said the vision extends beyond a single celebration. They hope Jamaica Rising Day will become a lasting platform to showcase Jamaican culture, businesses, artists and organizations throughout the diaspora while strengthening connections between Jamaica and overseas communities.
The overwhelming turnout and enthusiastic community response have fueled optimism that the Jamaica Rising Day Parade will become a permanent fixture on New York City’s cultural calendar, providing a dedicated annual celebration of Jamaican identity, heritage and national pride.
