CurlFest came back with a bang this year, leaving us utterly spellbound with its grandeur! The air was buzzing with excitement, as guests donned their most stunning attire, ready to strike a pose for the shutterbugs.
The visionary quintet behind this phenomenon, Ms. Henderson, Gia Lowe, Simone Mair, Tracey Coleman, and Charisse Higgins, collectively form the Curly Girl Collective. This alliance of powerful women started as an email exchange in 2010, offering advice and support for the care and maintenance of natural Black hair.

Now, let’s discuss the hair, oh what a spectacle! The women sported some truly jaw-dropping, unique hairstyles that left us awestruck. We saw everything from afros embellished with additional hair, to intricate butterfly accessories delicately positioned on top of afros. The creativity knew no bounds. The event also featured faux locs incorporated into afros, voluminous, bouncy curls, and exceptionally detailed braids that left us amazed. And we cannot overlook the stunning hairpieces that added an extra dash of glamour!
But CurlFest was not just a celebration of hair. It also introduced us to remarkable activations and panelists that left us feeling uplifted and empowered. The discussions were enlightening, sparking thought-provoking conversations and fostering a sense of community that touched our hearts. These insightful sessions imparted valuable knowledge and fresh perspectives, reminding us of the power of unity and the celebration of our natural beauty.
And who could possibly overlook the main stage? The DJs had the whole park swaying to their incredible mixes and catchy beats. The energy was palpable, and we couldn’t help but dance with abandon. The music lifted spirits and kept the celebration going all day. CurlFest truly outdid itself this year, and we are ecstatic to have been a part of such a phenomenal event. It was a true depiction of the beauty, innovation, and diversity within the natural hair community. We look forward to next year’s CurlFest with anticipation, confident that it will bring more unforgettable moments!
