In the midst of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, Amy Schumer shared a video of Martin Luther King Jr. saying that Israel “has the right to exist” and that he would “take a stand against anti-Semitism because it’s wrong, it’s unjust, and it’s evil.” King’s daughter Bernice King has since corrected the entertainer.
Bernice remarked, “Amy: Certainly, my father was against anti-Semitism, as am I,” she wrote. “He also believed militarism (along with racism and poverty) to be among the interconnected Triple Evils. I am certain he would call for Israel’s bombing of Palestinians to cease, for hostages to be released… and for us to work for true peace, which includes justice.”

In addition, Bernice recommended that the comedian read Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community? written by Martin Luther King Jr. in 1967.
Bernice stated, “I mourn with all who are mourning,” she added, “I know that we can’t afford to diminish and dehumanize each other if we are truly committed to ridding humanity of the Triple Evils and to freedom from oppression for all.”
Since the fighting started on October 7 following a terrorist attack by Hamas, more than 8,500 Palestinians and 1,400 Israelis have perished, according to news media.
