Barbadian fashion designer Rhea Cummins-Jordan emerged as winner of the Fashion in da House catwalk event, a fashion show organized by UNESCO and the European Union in Havana at the National Museum of Fine Arts.
With this artistic forum, UNESCO and the EU sought to recognize young talent in the region and promote entrepreneurship in the fashion industry.

Cummings was among a group made up of 16 young Caribbean designers representing the creativity of the region in the contest aimed at promoting the fashion industry, an area with great development potential in the Caribbean.
Participants came from Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Guyana, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago, and were the finalists of the Made in the Caribbean Fashion Design Competition.
International experts in fashion and entrepreneurship, including Omoyemi Akerele, general director of Lagos Fashion Week, Nigeria, provided advice to these creators and were part of the Transcultura Awards jury.
Ms. Cummins-Jordan’s award will encompass development opportunities for her creative initiatives, potentially involving entrepreneur mentoring, product development, branding, and business coaching. Her prize incorporates a two-month mentorship opportunity at the esteemed Center Rog in Ljubljana, Slovenia, commencing in June.
The Barbadian designer, founder and owner of Blac Flamingo Apparel label, expressed her sentiments about her victory saying, “It’s surreal. This is validation for me. It didn’t feel like a competition, all the contestants worked well together. I hope that it will inspire other young Barbadian fashion designers.”
