Rick Fox, the Canadian-born former NBA champion who became a naturalized Bahamian decades ago, has officially announced his intention to run in The Bahamas’ general elections next year. His decision injects a new level of excitement and uncertainty into the political landscape, where both major parties are already preparing for what is expected to be a fiercely contested national vote.
Fox, a three-time NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers and a familiar face in film and television, revealed his political ambitions this week. His announcement immediately sparked discussions across the archipelago about which party he will ultimately join. He confirmed that he has held meetings with the leadership of both the governing Progressive Liberal Party, led by Prime Minister Philip Davis, and the opposition Free National Movement, headed by Michael Pintard. Fox said he will declare his political alignment in the coming weeks.

General elections are constitutionally due by the final quarter of next year, but political activity has already intensified. The governing PLP recently secured a key by-election victory on one of the Family Islands, a contest both parties treated as a major indicator of public sentiment ahead of the national polls.
Fox was born in Canada to a Canadian mother and an Afro-Bahamian father and moved to The Bahamas at age seven. Over the years, he has maintained deep cultural and professional ties to the country. He currently serves as a national sports ambassador, a role to which he was appointed by the Davis administration.
In a message shared on social media, Fox explained what motivated his decision to enter public life.
“For months, I have been listening closely to the hopes and frustrations of my fellow Bahamians,” he wrote. “One truth is clear. The future of The Bahamas will depend on the choices we make right now. You have shared that you want more transparency, a modern economy that prioritizes affordability and security, and a country where opportunity is our reality and not just a promise. I share that vision. I am stepping forward today because we cannot wait any longer to realize the Bahamas we all know is possible.”
Fox confirmed that the Free National Movement has been actively encouraging him to run under its banner, but he emphasized that no final decision has been made.
He also outlined the principles he would bring to public office.
“We will embrace innovation, education, security and opportunity as the pillars of our future,” he said. “We will build a future where Bahamians can compete, influence and lead globally without ever feeling they must leave home. We will trust in the Lord with all of our hearts. We will not lean on our own understanding. In all our ways we will acknowledge Him and He will direct our path. As a candidate and as a leader for The Bahamas, I will demand transparency, honesty and integrity while calling on all of us to pursue excellence.”
Fox’s entry into the political arena is expected to reshape voter interest and potentially shift youth engagement, given his celebrity profile, long-standing ties to the community and reputation as a national figure. More details about his political alignment and specific policy proposals are expected soon.
