Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda has revealed that the country’s healthcare system has made significant progress thanks to the purchase of a $12.6 million loan made possible by the Inter-American Development Bank.
The financing will be crucial in supporting the construction of a cardiac center at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Center and strengthening vital healthcare infrastructure, especially at the dialysis and renal center.

Prime Minister Browne stressed in his speech to the Parliament the government’s resolve to give the Cancer Center’s reopening priority.
The government plans to work with the private sector to guarantee the facility’s effective functioning after acquiring it through compulsory means, therefore meeting the pressing demand for readily available cancer treatment.
Browne emphasized a preventative as well as a treatment-focused approach to healthcare in his comments.
Recognizing the value of education, he applauded the Sir Lester Bird Medical Center and the Medical Benefits Scheme for their proactive efforts in encouraging residents to lead healthier lives that include greater physical exercise and improved nutrition.
Browne emphasized that the government encourages investments from the private sector, using Sir Joseph John’s Doctors’ Hospital as an example.
The overarching goal is to establish Antigua and Barbuda as a center for medical tourism, enhancing both the local population’s well-being and economic prosperity.
