A Jamaican-born man has been charged with murder after authorities alleged he fatally shot his niece in the Bronx following a long-running dispute over the ownership of a family home in neighboring Westchester County.
Police identified the suspect as Michael Foster, 58, who was arrested and charged in connection with the death of his 39-year-old niece, Julia Anderson. Investigators say Anderson had just completed her work shift shortly before midnight when she was shot multiple times as she prepared to enter her vehicle in the Wakefield section of the Bronx. She was transported to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

According to investigators, the fatal confrontation stemmed from an inheritance dispute involving a family home in Mount Vernon. The property had reportedly been left to Anderson by her grandmother, a decision that prosecutors believe intensified tensions between the two relatives. Court records also indicate that Anderson and Foster had been involved in ongoing legal battles over ownership of the residence before the shooting.
Authorities said Foster now faces charges including second-degree murder, manslaughter and multiple counts of criminal possession of a weapon. During a search of his residence, investigators reportedly recovered several firearms, including two semi-automatic pistols and an AR-15-style rifle. Prosecutors also noted in court that Foster has a prior manslaughter conviction dating back to the late 1980s, a factor cited in their request that he be held without bail.
The killing has left relatives and members of the Jamaican community in New York in shock. Anderson, who worked as a caregiver for individuals with developmental disabilities, was remembered by family members as a compassionate and hardworking woman whose life was cut short just weeks before her 40th birthday. The case remains under investigation as prosecutors prepare for the next stage of the criminal proceedings.
