President Irfaan Ali has announced that Guyana will soon introduce a comprehensive social housing programme aimed at improving access to affordable housing for vulnerable and low-income citizens, while eliminating the country’s housing backlog within the next four years.
Speaking at the opening of the International Business Expo 2026, Ali said the new strategy, which will be officially unveiled in the coming weeks, will focus on some of the country’s most vulnerable groups, including:

- Single parents
- Low-income households
- Moderate-income earners
- Middle-income families
According to the president, the initiative is designed to ensure that housing opportunities are tailored to the different needs of Guyanese while keeping pace with growing demand.
Ali said the government’s goal is to reduce Guyana’s housing backlog to zero within four years, describing housing as a key pillar of the country’s broader development agenda. The programme is expected to provide targeted solutions for vulnerable citizens while expanding affordable housing opportunities across multiple income groups.
The announcement was made during the International Business Expo, which attracted more than 500 exhibitors, including developers, banks, architects, engineers, prefabricated housing companies and green technology firms. The event highlighted the government’s continued emphasis on modern construction methods and partnerships to accelerate housing development.
During the same event, Andrew Holness expressed interest in strengthening housing cooperation between Jamaica and Guyana, suggesting collaboration in areas such as construction technology, labour and skills development to help both countries address their housing shortages.
