Russia has reaffirmed its support for Cuba, pledging continued humanitarian assistance as tensions escalate between Havana and United States.
Speaking on Friday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova strongly criticized Washington’s approach, accusing it of applying aggressive pressure and attempting to interfere in Cuba’s internal affairs.

“Against the backdrop of the targeted and malicious escalation against Cuba, we reaffirm our solidarity with the Cuban government and the Cuban people,” Zakharova said, rejecting what she described as “blackmail and threats” in foreign policy.
The comments come as U.S. President Donald Trump has increased rhetoric toward Cuba, calling for sweeping economic and political reforms while also suggesting stronger action against the island. Washington has maintained pressure on Havana through sanctions and demands for expanded political freedoms.
Russia, however, has positioned itself as a key ally, emphasizing its long-standing relationship with Cuba, dating back to the 1959 revolution led by Fidel Castro and continuing through the Cold War era.
Zakharova reiterated that Moscow supports Cuba’s right to self-determination and development on its own terms, adding that humanitarian aid would continue during what she described as a period of “artificially fueled confrontation.”
In a recent demonstration of that support, a Russian oil tanker delivered approximately 700,000 barrels of crude to Cuba in March, easing fuel shortages on the island. The shipment proceeded despite U.S. sanctions pressure, with Washington allowing it on humanitarian grounds.
The developments highlight deepening geopolitical divisions, as Cuba navigates economic challenges while balancing pressure from the United States and support from long-time partners like Russia.
