Melissa Vieira-Greene, a Guyanese-born leader and former U.S. Air Force officer, has been appointed as the New York University (NYU) ambassador for the Master of Science in Health Law and Strategy (MSHLS) program, representing the Caribbean and Latin America.
Raised in a close-knit Guyanese household and later in Brooklyn, New York, Vieira-Greene credits her upbringing for instilling values of service, faith, and responsibility to others. “Our home was a place where people came for guidance, and I saw early on that leadership starts with responsibility for others. Brooklyn reinforced that lesson differently; it demanded independence, discipline, and resilience,” she recalled.

Vieira-Greene’s 21-year military career in the U.S. Air Force further shaped her leadership philosophy. Serving in both operations and human resources roles, she focused on workforce management, personnel operations, and leadership support. She deployed four times, including to Iraq and Afghanistan, supporting missions where organizational clarity and decision-making were critical. Injured in the line of duty, Vieira-Greene retired as a Wounded Warrior, an experience she says cemented her understanding of how leadership decisions directly impact those executing the mission.
Following her military service, Vieira-Greene spent two years as the administration leader for International SOS in Guyana and now serves as CEO of Human Resources Warrior LLC, where she focuses on developing leadership skills in individuals, particularly first-generation professionals and women. She emphasizes that organizational safety, workforce performance, and operational efficiency flow from strong leadership, disciplined systems, and clear accountability.
Reflecting on her academic pursuits, Vieira-Greene explained her decision to join NYU’s Law-Wagner MSHLS program: “Throughout my career, the decisions I have been responsible for making often involve legal, financial, and ethical considerations simultaneously. I chose this program because it integrates these areas, reflecting the realities of leadership in complex environments. The curriculum, faculty, and diverse cohort provide a holistic perspective on how law, policy, finance, and strategy shape real-world decisions. It has strengthened my approach to evaluating operational challenges with a lens that balances safety, compliance, and accountability.”
Vieira-Greene is also proud to serve as a trailblazer for other Caribbean professionals. “I am on track to become the first Guyanese graduate of MSHLS. I see this as more than a personal achievement. It creates visibility for others from Guyana, the Caribbean, and Latin America to see themselves in global academic and leadership spaces,” she said.
Her appointment as NYU ambassador highlights not only her professional achievements but also her commitment to mentorship, leadership development, and expanding access to international academic opportunities for underrepresented communities.
