On February 7th, 1974, the people of Grenada stepped boldly into the future, claiming their sovereignty and charting their own path forward. It was a moment born of courage, determination, and unwavering faith—a legacy that continues to guide the nation to this day.
This year’s theme, “Grenada at 52:
Anchored in Faith, Guided by Purpose,” perfectly captures the essence of the
Grenadian spirit. It reminds us that Grenada’s journey has never been one of chance, but one defined by resilience, clarity of purpose, and a steadfast belief in the future.
Anchored in Faith
Through challenges and triumphs alike—from natural disasters to economic tests—the people of Grenada have always held fast to their sense of hope. Faith has rooted Grenadians at home and in the diaspora in the knowledge that no obstacle is insurmountable, no setback permanent. This enduring strength has been the foundation on which the nation has grown.
Guided by Purpose
In the 52 years since independence, Grenada has made significant strides.
From advancements in education, tourism, agriculture, and health care, to the nation’s leadership in culture and sports, Grenada has shown the world what a small island with a mighty heart can achieve.
Purpose has shaped Grenada’s development, propelled innovation, and inspired generations to contribute to a brighter tomorrow.
Celebrating Cultural Pride and Creativity
Grenada’s cultural identity—rich, colorful, and deeply rooted in community—continues to shine. Through its music, festivals, cuisine, and artistic expression, the nation celebrates not only its past but its vibrant present. Creativity remains one of Grenada’s strongest gifts, and its storytellers, musicians, writers, and artisans continue to elevate Grenadian identity on the world stage.
Honoring the Resilience of the People
At the heart of Grenada’s progress is its people—resourceful, hardworking, and resilient. Grenadians at home and in the diaspora have upheld the values of unity, patriotism, and service. Their collective dedication has strengthened national institutions, expanded opportunity, and fostered a sense of pride that binds all Grenadians together.
Looking Forward
As Grenada enters its 53rd year of independence, may this theme inspire every citizen to continue building a nation that lives up to its highest ideals.
A nation anchored in faith—firm, unshakable, hopeful.
A nation guided by purpose—determined, visionary, and united.
Today, we honor the past, celebrate the present, and embrace the promise of the future.
May the next 52 years bring continued prosperity, peace, and progress to the people of Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique.
Happy 52nd Independence Anniversary!
May God continue to bless us all and Grenada.
Happy Independence Day from Public Advocate Jumaane Williams

Happy Independence Day to all who share heritage from Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique.
As the proud son of Grenadian immigrants, this occasion and the independence that we celebrate when we raise the flag is deeply personal to me, and to my family. This is a time to honor the courage, resilience, and determination of everyone involved in the struggle for independence, and to remember both our shared strength as a people, and our responsibility to keep moving that legacy forward.
I spent many wonderful days of my childhood on the island with my grandmother, and I was humbled to return two years ago to celebrate the nation’s Golden Jubilee and meet with Grenada’s Prime Minister and other dignitaries. I hope to return – as my mother often does – and continue to share our heritage and history with my family. To see Grenada’s history and present, to look to its future, through sights, sounds, and captivating cultural celebrations, is extraordinary – the beauty of the island and its people, the unity and pride, reverberate across the years and miles. I am forever proud of my roots and grateful for the time I’ve spent on the Isle of Spice.
In my work in New York City, home to tens of thousands of Grenadians, I celebrate and uplift the ways in which Grenadian culture has influenced our city, and strive to honor the proud history of the island in my work for justice, equity, and liberty. The Isle Of Spice has shaped who I am, and people of Grenadian heritage have shaped what our city is. This celebration calls us to reflect on the values of Grenada and its people. These values of respect, community, tenacity, and unity allow us to continue to progress, move forward, and encourage one another. As we celebrate over five decades of independence, we continue to look to a promising future filled with hope, vibrancy and endurance.
