As gangs tried to take over, Haiti’s major airport was briefly closed on November 11, 2024, according to the US embassy. This was the day a new temporary prime minister was supposed to take over the leadership of a nation experiencing a rise in violence.
In certain areas of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, gangs and police engaged in gunfights, with heavily armed officials hiding behind walls while terrified citizens fled. Gangs burn down houses in other affluent neighborhoods.

According to a travel advisory issued by the US Embassy in Haiti, the airport in the city was closed because of “gang-led efforts to block travel to and from Port-au-Prince which may include armed violence, and disruptions to roads, ports, and airports.”
Although the reporters were unable to quickly corroborate the event with police, it follows accusations that gangs fired at a Spirit Airlines flight and images that showed bullet holes in the aircraft.
The unrest follows the dismissal of businessman Alix Didier Fils-Aimé as temporary prime minister in place of Garry Conille, who conflicted with the council, by the council for the Caribbean country’s restoration of democratic order.
Three council members were recently charged with corruption, and the council has a history of internal strife.
