Authorities in Manhattan said that a gang of youngsters had attacked former governor of New York David Paterson and his stepson on a sidewalk on the night of October 4, 2024.
On the Upper East Side’s Second Avenue close to East 96th Street, Paterson was walking his dog with his 20-year-old stepson Anthony Chester Sliwa, according to family-spoken sources. A news station was recently informed by law enforcement sources that at that point, they saw three teenagers having fun on a fire escape and ordered them to come down.

According to sources, the teenagers descended and pursued the former governor and his stepson to the corner, where they assaulted them in front of a McDonald’s on Second Avenue. Police officials said that during the incident, Sliwa received a punch in the face.
Both had minor knocks and bruises and were sent to NY-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. According to two individuals, Paterson, 70, was struck many times during the incident, although he seemed well and remained awake late on the night of the event. More serious scratches and bruises as well as what appeared to be a concussion were sustained by his stepson, but according to accounts, he should recover.
Anthony is Paterson’s stepson; his father, Curtis Sliwa, founded Guardian Angels and ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 2014. Sliwa confirmed his son was attacked and expressed gratitude that his son was on the mend. According to a statement from the former governor’s office, the attack happened close to Paterson’s house and the teenagers “had a previous interaction with his stepson.”
The statement noted, “They both suffered some injuries but were able to fight off their attackers. They are currently at Cornell Hospital as a precaution. They have already filed a police report, and no further information is available at this time.”
In a second statement made public early the following morning, Paterson said that he and his stepson had been discharged from the hospital and commended the police for their “quick response time.”
Immediately after, the three teenagers who had attacked Paterson and his stepson fled. The police were actively searching for youngsters.
