Rita’s greatness cannot be overstated. She’s foundational, having held things together as Bob ascended to international prominence with the Wailers. They were married in 1966, the same year that she witnessed the Jamaican arrival of Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie— an event that encouraged her to become Rastafarian. As part of the I-Three’s vocal support in the Wailers, she added another dimension to the group’s rootsy sound—one that was shaped by tough experience and first-hand awareness of what was happening around her in Jamaica and the world, socially and politically. “Rita has played a pivotal role in developing and preserving Bob Marley’s rich legacy.” – Lee Jaffe (featured photographer)
Grassroots Campaign to Honor Rita Marley:
To further celebrate Rita Marley’s contributions to music, business, and culture, Donisha Prendergast is proud to join hands with City Winery to launch a grassroots campaign to have Rita Marley recognized in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Along with a scroll available for people to sign in person during the exhibit at City Winery, and an online petition has been created with the goal of gathering 1 million signatures, demonstrating widespread support for this well-deserved honor. Fans are encouraged to join the movement and sign the petition at www.rita4thehall.com
City Winery invites all fans and supporters of the Marley family to join in this celebration of music, art, and legacy. Together, we can honor the extraordinary impact of Rita Marley and ensure her rightful place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
In support of the ongoing work of the Marley family, a portion of the proceeds from all events will be donated to the Rita Marley Foundation and the Rita Marley Girls Center, dedicated to empowering women and youth in Jamaica and across the globe.
