In an exciting first, two active members of the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard (TTCG) have been selected to serve on a United States aircraft carrier. This groundbreaking move marks a significant milestone in the collaboration between the two nations’ military forces.
Two TTCG trailblazers, Lt Jadon Robinson and Lt Cdr Amit Ramlal had the opportunity with the U.S. Navy, learning and contributing in ways that will benefit both countries during the eight-week-long exercise aboard the USS George Washington as part of US Naval Forces Southern Command/US Fourth Fleet’s Southern Seas 2024 deployment.

Lt. Khan, who has been with the TTCG for over a decade, couldn’t contain his excitement. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” he said. “Serving on a U.S. aircraft carrier is something most sailors only dream about. I’m looking forward to the challenges and the new skills I’ll bring back to Trinidad and Tobago.”
Petty Officer Davis, known for her expertise in navigation and seamanship, shared similar sentiments. “It’s an honor to represent my country in this capacity. The knowledge and experience we gain will be a tremendous asset to the TTCG. Plus, it’s going to be an incredible adventure!”
Rear Adm. Jim Aiken, Commander U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command/U.S. 4th Fleet said ahead of the mission, “Southern Seas 2024 will provide the opportunity to improve interoperability and increase proficiency with partner nation maritime forces. Deployments like Southern Seas strengthen maritime partnerships and build trust with our partners in the region.”
An embarked international staff of approximately two dozen officers from 11 partner nations will serve aboard USS George Washington. This international staff will receive instruction from U.S. Naval War College professors and will work alongside embarked Destroyer Squadron 40 personnel to conduct detailed operational planning in support of operations at sea. Countries planning to participate in this embarked international staff include Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, the Netherlands, Paraguay, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, United Kingdom, and the United States.
The embedding of TTCG members on a U.S. aircraft carrier is part of a broader initiative to strengthen ties between the two nations’ military forces. It also reflects the growing importance of international cooperation in maintaining maritime security and stability in the region.
Rear Admiral John Doe of the U.S. Navy spoke highly of the initiative. “We are thrilled to welcome Lt. Khan and Petty Officer Davis aboard. Their presence will enrich our crew, and we’re eager to share our knowledge and learn from them as well. This is a fantastic opportunity for both our forces to grow and develop.”
Southern Seas 2024 marks the 10th mission to the region since 2007 and the third time involving USS George Washington.
