Well-armed militants have been invading Haiti for the past two weeks, claiming they want to overthrow Prime Minister Ariel Henry.
Henry has consented to resign to facilitate the establishment of a transitional administration, under pressure from the US and other Caribbean nations.
On March 17, 2024, UNICEF, the children’s organization of the United Nations, released a dismal assessment of the situation in Haiti, stating that it was “almost like a scene out of ‘Mad Max,’” informing humanitarian agencies to the “famine and malnutrition” individuals were experiencing while they were unable to reach them.
A curfew was imposed in the Ouest department, which encompasses Port-au-Prince, on the day of the discovery and was prolonged until Wednesday. The expiry date of the state of emergency is April 3.
Due to the situation, a few nations, notably the US and EU member states, have withdrawn diplomatic staff from Haiti.
In the meanwhile, preparations are on to form a security mission headed by Kenya to support the overburdened police force of the Caribbean Island country.
