Bob Marley: One Love, the music biopic from Paramount, managed to generate revenue at the worldwide box office even though it faced competition from Dune: Part Two and, more recently, Kung Fu Panda 4. After over a month of release in cinemas, the movie is still consistently ranked in the top five at the US box office, having brought in close to $90 million to date. Once its run ends, One Love is all but sure to reach the coveted $100 million threshold.
It remains to be seen if it can cross the $200 million mark internationally. One Love has made a total of $160 million worldwide to date, with $71 million coming from international markets. One Love, which is handled by Reinaldo Marcus Green—who also directed the Oscar-winning movie King Richard—stars Kingsley Ben-Adir as the legendary reggae artist Bob Marley. Ben-Adir was effectively a backup dancer for Ryan Gosling during his performance of “I’m Just Ken” at the recent Oscars, which underscores how recent the film’s popularity has been.

Even while the film itself hasn’t exactly received positive reviews, everyone seems to agree on the attraction of Ben-Adir’s lead performance. On the aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, One Love presently has a 42% “rotten” rating. Collider’s Nate Richard writes that Ben-Adir and his co-star Lashana Lynch, who plays Rita Marley, are “kept afloat” in this “flat and uninspired” biopic. However, the movie’s reaction from viewers has been somewhat more favorable; opening day attendees gave it an A CinemaScore and a 92% audience approval rating on RT. Marley: One Love’ I Video
One Love, which was made on an alleged $70 million budget, is centered around a significant time in Marley’s life and demonstrates the continued popularity of the music biopic genre. Recent blockbusters include the Elton John biography Rocketman, which brought in about $200 million worldwide, and the Oscar-winning film Elvis, directed by Baz Luhrmann, which brought in over $280 million worldwide.
Additionally, a few years before that, the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody set records with a global box office take of almost $900 million. The Amy Winehouse movie Back to Black, which has its domestic premiere in May, will thereafter be shown to the public. The U.K. ($17.4 million), France ($12.7 million), Germany ($4.2 million), Australia ($4 million), and Brazil (also $4 million) are One Love’s largest overseas markets, highlighting Marley’s enduring popularity on a worldwide scale. One Love, which is now showing in cinemas, also stars Michael Gandofini, Tosin Cole, and James Norton.
