A medical school in Guyana may be opened by the University of the West Indies (UWI) School of Medicine, according to President Irfaan Ali.
The President stated that students from neighboring Suriname would be able to attend the School of Medicine because it would most likely be situated in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).

President Ali stated, “When we launched the New Amsterdam Hospital, we said that in that facility we negotiated a building for teaching services and that message went out regionally and globally.”
“Today, I’m pleased to inform you that the University of the West Indies School of Medicine has now approached us to be part of this vision in bringing their campus to Guyana and negotiations and discussions would have commenced,” he remarked.
While addressing the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation during the opening of the pathology lab, President Ali made the news (GPHC).
President Ali claims that talks and negotiations on the matter have started.
“Importantly, in the negotiations, we are now working on ensuring that the rates are the same as local students in Trinidad and Tobago so there will be equity and quality matched together.”
Recognizing the existence of the University of Guyana’s School of Medicine, Ali said “Competition is a part of life and a necessity in improving quality.”
Since President Ali stated that talks with UWI are still ongoing, no timetable for the school’s formation was given.
