The Inter-American Development Bank and the University of the West Indies St. Augustine Campus have agreed to a technical cooperation agreement worth $996,000.
It will put into place a Monitoring, Verification, and Reporting (MRV) system for mangrove ecosystems, which will offer a platform for scientifically based data on the sequestration and release of blue carbon in the sites of participating countries of the United Kingdom Blue Carbon Fund.

Because mangroves in Trinidad and Tobago and other coastal ecosystems may help to mitigate climate change, research into blue carbon, also known as carbon collected by the ocean, is crucial.
Professor Rose-Marie Belle Antoine, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Campus Principal emphasized the significance of this research because “they provide resilience against extreme weather events, like a buffer zone between the raging sea and the land and they help to slow and reduce coastal erosion, which is accelerating due to rising sea levels.”
She further emphasized that the need that women and disadvantaged groups to get appropriate representation in project-related training activities was accepted by all stakeholders. This is in line with The UWI’s ongoing emphasis on social equality, particularly for people with disabilities, and gender justice.
