Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez’s gun Buyback event was a huge success.
The event, which took place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Cornerstone Baptist Church at 574 Madison Street in Bedford Stuyvesant, was said to have netted the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office 206 firearms.

It’s possible that the incentives provided played a role in the large turnout.
District Attorney Eric Gonzalez stated, “ This unprecedentedly successful Gun Buyback is a testament to what we can achieve when the community, local businesses, and law enforcement come together.”
He added, “we know that fewer guns in our neighborhoods mean less gun violence, and these 206 guns will be destroyed so they can never do harm. Public safety is a shared responsibility and I’m grateful that the Brooklyn community joined forces this holiday season to promote safer, healthier communities that are free from gun violence.”
Eric Gonzalez, the Brooklyn district attorney, and Keechant Sewell, the commissioner of the New York City Police Department, made the announcement that owners of assault weapons and working firearms would get a $500 bank card for each weapon and $50 for each BB gun or toy pistol.
Sewell noted, “The most effective way to reduce gun violence in our city is to reduce the number of guns on our streets.” He continued, “to that end, the NYPD will continue to deploy every strategy available to keep New Yorkers safe – including Gun Buyback events like this one.”
An iPad was also given to the first 25 registrants.
T-Mobile and Junior’s Restaurant contributed the devices as part of a public-private cooperation to improve safety.
This year’s gun buyback was the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office’s third of its kind.
The preceding two events resulted in the surrender of 109 guns in total, including a wide variety of weapons frequently used in street crimes.
