TRENDING NOW - JASON WU

TRENDING NOW - JASON WU

 By Walter Greene

Having designed the legendary gown worn by First Lady Michelle Obama at the Presidential Inauguration Ball, young American-Taiwanese fashion designer Jason Wu certainly got the boost any up and coming designer needed at the start of their career. Now, Wu is a staple during New York Fashion Week and his credibility has been definitely enhanced. He's done other clothes for the First Lady as his national and International clientele have skyrocketed. Business is good for this young designer, basically because he's good at what he does. Its a case where Jason was totally prepared and ready for his big break and his business has grown tremendously because of that.

TOP BLACK MODELS

For Fall/ Winter 2012 Jason pulled off one of his best shows to date. Hailed as his most confident fashion effort in his career so far, Jason paraded six of the world's top new models of color who all brought his collection to life. The drama started when cymbals clashed as sliding red doors opened to reveal a parade of models wearing his `China' inspired collection. Splashes from the Qing Dynasty, old Hollywood take on Chinese style and the military colors and shape of the Chinese army uniforms were obvious reference points for this collection. Army green Mao jackets were modernized by way of a fitted silhouette, paired with pencil trousers.

ASIAN INFLUENCE

Lush embroideries, dangling tassels and Asian hats with hanging accoutrements were shown. Fitted dresses were embroidered and decorated with bold piping. A sweet segment of clingy dresses in red and black lace were Jason's ode to evening glamour that looked like a throwback from the Shanghai Express. Thigh-high splits were balanced by the slashed necklines from high collars and strong shoulders, some with contrasting epaulets that brought a touch of drama the collection.

LUXURIOUS COLLECTION

Jason paraded a fine collection that paid homage to his heritage, but was still in keeping with the modern day trend of femininity. The clothes were luxurious but drenched with a shower of practicality. This designer has a more affordable line in Target stores now. His ready-to-wear Fashion Week showing was by no means compatible to the Target offerings, but had the magical touch of Wu's realistic hand. Going back to his roots seems like a natural progression for this young designer at this time of his career. Jason had not been back to his birth-home since he left Taiwan as a child. He told reporters that he recently made a trip to China with his father, from which he was inspired by the history, culture and style of the place of his birth. Jason was born in Taiwan and moved to Canada when he was 10 years-old where he learnt to speak English.
