HAITI-UNREST-CARICOM concerned about violent protests in Haiti

CMC —

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) says it is “deeply concerned” about continuing violent protests in its member nation Haiti, which has resulted in at least four deaths in as many days.

The violence continued Monday, with a call for President Jovenel Moise to step down, despite an announcement by Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant over the weekend that the fuel price hike which triggered the protests would be suspended.

Protestors have been burning tires in the streets and mounting roadblocks since government announced the double-digit hike in the prices of petrol, diesel and kerosene which the administration said were part of an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to increase government revenue.
