BAHAMAS: Multimillion-dollar drug bust

NASSAU, BAHAMAS, (CMC) | Law enforcement authorities say they have seized more than two million US dollars worth of drugs during an operation in the Bimini District after intercepting a vessel on Friday. The police said in collaboration with the officers of the Drug Enforcement Unit they mounted a joint operation, intercepted a 26ft. aqua and white “contender” vessel in waters north of Alice Town, Bimini.

They said two men had been arrested after discovering two white coolers and two backpacks all containing a number of packages of suspected cocaine.

“The estimated street value of the drugs is US$ 2.3 million dollars. The suspected cocaine and the two males, who are residents of Bimini, were taken into police custody and are expected to be arraigned before the Magistrate Court in New Providence early next week,” the police said in a statement.

They said they were continuing to appeal to the public to share information on any illegal/suspicious activities in their communities: “No matter how small or insignificant the tip may seem, members of the public are urged to anonymously contact the police”.
