CASTRIES, St Lucia (CMC) — The St Lucia-born Nobel Laureate, Sir Derek Walcott, died Friday after a prolonged illness. He was 87.
Relatives, who were by his bedside, said Walcott, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992, died at his home at 7:45 am (local time). No details of his illness have yet been disclosed.
In court on Wednesday, agent Bart Hernandez and trainer Julio Estrada remained stone-faced when the verdicts were read, while a dozen relatives and supporters gasped and cried.
The jury of nine women and three men deliberated for five hours after the seven-week trial concluded.
