PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti (CMC) — At least 11 people were killed and several others injured following a vehicular accident in the south of the French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country on Saturday night, officials have confirmed.
The Directorate of Civil Protection (DPC) said the accident occurred in Cavaillon, a department of the South, at around 9:30 pm (Haiti time) and that at least 11 were killed and 15 wounded.
It said those injured are being treated at the hospital in Les Cayes.
The DPC said that exact circumstances of the accident are unknown but the Haitian National Police (PNH), the National Ambulance Center (CAN), the DPC and the Haitian Red Cross (CRH) were at the scene.
It said rescue teams that were trying to clear the accident, also struck a wall, but gave no further details.
The police are also reporting that on Saturday night, three boys aged between 12 and 14 were killed after they were struck by lightning while playing football. Four others were also wounded.
“The injured were taken care by the health center nearby and one of them had to be transferred to the University Hospital of Mirebalais,” the authorities added
